Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the neuromusculoskeletal system.  It is a regulated health profession, recognized by statute in all 50 states, and is practiced in over 100 countries around the world.

Doctors of Chiropractic often utilize a manual technique, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.

02

What is an adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a highly skilled and precise movement, usually applied by hand or instrument, to a joint of the body with the intent to restore proper movement and optimize function.

03

What conditions can chiropractic help?

Doctors of Chiropractic can care for patients of all ages, with a variety of ailments.  Some common conditions chiropractic treat include, but are not limited to:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Strains and sprains from daily activities
  • Work and sports related injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Whiplash
  • Restricted movement in the neck, back, shoulders, or limbs
  • Gait, foot, or hand problems

04

What is that popping sound that I sometimes hear when I get adjusted?

Adjustment of a joint causes a change in pressures within the join, which may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

05

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

Doctors of Chiropractic are primary care physicians.  You don't need a referral or permission from anyone to see a chiropractor.

However, if you expect financial assistance from certain insurance plans, some policies dictate that certain approval steps be taken before commencing care.

Be careful that you don’t allow your health to be compromised by the restrictions of an insurance plan.

06

I'm feeling good, why would I want to go to the chiropractor?

To properly take care of a car one must regularly change the oil, change the air filter, keep the tires properly inflated, and check that the battery and cables are working as they should. These maintenance procedures ensure that your car will be running efficiently and effectively for a long time. This applies to your body in a similar fashion. Pain is a good indicator that your body isn't running at full efficiency/capacity, but it isn't necessary for a problem. Underlying problems can go undetected for great periods of time before they become painful/problematic.  You don't necessarily feel a clogged artery, but you certainly do feel a heart attack. This is why it is important to maintain your health through nutrition, physical activity, and having your spine checked out by a chiropractor regularly.

07

Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?  Am I going to have to go for life?

The hands-on nature of chiropractic is essentially what requires patients to visit the chiropractor a number of times. To be treated by a chiropractor, a patient often needs to be in his or her office. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a three weeks). A chiropractor may provide acute, chronic, and/or preventive care thus making a certain number of visits necessary.

Most patients who receive regular chiropractic care do so because they perceive the benefits they are obtaining from it.  There is nothing about chiropractic adjustments that makes you "dependent" on them or force you to become a "patient for life"; rather it is the everyday stresses (physical, psychological, work, family, etc. ) that make chiropractic care an important tool for achieving and maintaining optimal health.

08

I'm an athlete.  Can I benefit from chiropractic care?

Besides providing drug-free care that can help with injury prevention and speed up the recovery time of common sport injuries, chiropractic may actually improve athletic performance.  Chiropractic adjustments can help to improve the overall function of the nervous system, which in turn, improves the efficiency of the communication between the brain and the body.  When fractions of a second count, this may give an athlete an edge over the competition. Professional athletes such as: Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Evander Holyfield, Tiger Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Stockton, Karl Malone, and many others have all attributed receiving regular chiropractic care as an integral part of their longevity and success in sports.
